European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy (2010 - 2014)
Ambassaador Štefan Füle was born on 24 May 1962 in Sokolov in Czechoslovakia. He studied at the Faculty of Philosophy at the Charles University in Prague (1980–1981) and the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (1981–1986).
In his long diplomatic career (1986–2017) he held a number of positions within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He served as First Secretary of Permanent Delegation of the Czech Republic to the UN in New York from 1990 to 1995. His next assignment was as Director of the United Nations Department from 1995 to 1996 and then as Director of the Security Policy Department from 1996 to 1998 both in the MFA. From 1998 to 2001 he served as the Czech Ambassador to Lithuania and also being the NATO Contact Point there. In 2000, he was appointed as the First Deputy Minister of Defense and in 2003 he returned to diplomatic work. He had served as the Czech Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 2003 to 2005 before being appointed as the Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to NATO from 2005 to 2009.
He served as the Minister for European Affairs during the Czech Presidency of the European Union in 2009. Subsequently, he served as the European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy from February 2010 to October 2014.
After his mandate at the European Commission expired he returned back to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs where he served as Special Envoy for the OSCE and the Western Balkans until October 2017.
Since November 2017 he has worked for CEFC Group (Europe) Company, a.s., he was Member of the Supervisory Board and in 2018 he was appointed as the Chairman of the Administrative Board of the Czech China Chamber of Cooperation in Prague.
Ambassador Füle received the State Awards of the Republic of Lithuania and of the Republic of Poland, and number of Ministerial Awards of the Czech Republic.
He is Member of the Board of Trustees of Friends of Europe and Member of the International Advisory Board of the Central European Strategy Council.
